Letter 8: Request to Assess in Additional Areas

Reviewed previewThis page shows the reviewed public portion and the exact outline of the member edition. What the labels mean

When to Use It

Send this letter when the district’s evaluation plan or consent paperwork leaves out an area where you suspect a problem. The rule is specific: the district must assess the child in all areas related to the suspected disability (34 C.F.R. § 300.304(c)(4)), and the evaluation must be comprehensive enough to identify all of the child’s special education and related service needs (34 C.F.R. § 300.304(c)(6)). An area nobody tests is an area nobody serves.

Send it to: the director of special education or the person coordinating the evaluation, with a copy to the principal.

Do not hold your consent form hostage to this letter. No clock runs until the district receives your signed consent (34 C.F.R. § 300.301(c)). Sign and return the consent form for the assessments already listed, and send this letter with it or right behind it.
