Letter 6: The Parent Concerns Letter: Your Page in the IEP

WHEN TO USE IT

The annual review is coming. The district will arrive with a draft written by people who see your child six hours a day. You see the other eighteen - the homework meltdowns, the stomachaches on school mornings, the word finally read aloud in the kitchen. Federal law says the IEP team, in developing the IEP, must consider “the concerns of the parents for enhancing the education of their child.” 34 C.F.R. § 300.324(a)(1)(ii). Sent a week before the meeting, this letter puts your concerns in front of the team in writing - and asks that it be attached to the IEP, so your observations travel with the document to every teacher who reads it.

Send it by email to the case manager and the meeting chairperson at least five school days before the annual review. Keep a copy and bring one to the meeting.
