Letter 21: Request for an Assistive Technology Evaluation

When to Use It

Send this letter when your child cannot access schoolwork in some concrete way - cannot produce written work, cannot read grade-level text, cannot be understood - and no one has assessed what tools might bridge the gap. The IEP team must consider whether your child needs assistive technology devices and services each time it develops, reviews, or revises the IEP (34 C.F.R. § 300.324(a)(2)(v)), and the district must make them available if they are required as part of your child’s special education, related services, or supplementary aids and services (34 C.F.R. § 300.105(a)). An assistive technology service includes evaluating the child’s needs, including a functional evaluation in the child’s customary environment - the classroom, not a clinic (34 C.F.R. § 300.6(a)).
