Letter 17: Request to Reconvene the IEP Team Mid-Year
When to Use It
Send this letter when the data shows your child is not making the progress the IEP expects - flat progress reports, falling scores, a goal going nowhere. You do not have to wait for the annual review. The IEP team must revise the IEP, as appropriate, to address any lack of expected progress toward the annual goals and in the general education curriculum (34 C.F.R. § 300.324(b)(1)(ii)(A)). Send it to: the director of special education, with a copy to your child’s case manager or IEP team chair.
Lead with numbers, not adjectives. A district can debate “struggling.” It cannot debate its own progress report.
